Fiction. Literature. HTML:

The Fruit of Stone is the story of the lifelong friendship of two men and their love for the woman who eludes them. Though Gretchen is married to his best friend, McEban has been in love with her since they were children growing up on adjacent ranches in Wyoming. When she leaves her husband for a new life, the two men follow her in an odyssey aross the American West that forces truths and reveals the mystical, sometimes fatal bonds of love and loyalty. Muscular, vivid, wise and painful, funny, and true; Mark Spragg's novel is entirely unforgettable.

Couldn't get into it due to the repetitive narrative style, as in "he does this, and then does that, but he really thinks he might have done the other thing". It's overused and lacks rhythm that keeps the reader engaged. The cowboy thing grows old, though his creative use of descriptions as it relates to the environment is well done. But it left me wanting much more, so I quit reading it half way through. I DID enjoy "An Unfinished Life" and had hoped for more with this book. Oh well. ( )

Great writing, as usual for Mark Spragg, although the story is very sad ( )

I couldn't help wanting to follow McEban wherever he went as the details of his life are laid out by Mark Spragg. The quick shifts from the present to his childhood make for a little confusion because the situations often seem to overlap so that you are not sure which time you are in---the past or the present---but it's done so on purpose. The audio version, read by the author, is wonderful. ( )

The plot and spare writing were reminiscent of "So Long See You Tomorrow," by William Maxwell: the protagonist has always been in love with his best friend (and neighbor)'s wife. Good, but less well done than "When Rivers Change Direction." ( )
