""This splendidly written, richly illustrated book is unlike any ever written about origami"" - Martin Gardner""Filled with provocative ideas and unexpected connections . . . truly inspirational."" - Milton GlaserIn this extraordinary book, Peter Engel, one of the America's most celebrated origami artists, explores the secrets of Japanese paperfolding and explains how to create complex animals and objects from simple squares of paper. The book begins with a clear and concise introduction to the terminology and basic techniques of paperfolding. Then, in a fact-filled exposition of origami's history and theory - including an extraordinary interview with Japan's legendary master, Akira Yoshizawa - the author, a writer and architect, explores origami's links with mathematics, art, philosophy, and nature.Challenging paperfolders to turn a ""mute, geometric shape into a recognisable figure,"" the author provides clear, step-by-step instructions for 24 delightful projects of his own creations. His designs of simple fish and birds are easy to make. Others, including mammals and insects, use original techniques and pose a greater challenge. Among the models you'll learn to construct are an angelfish, hummingbird, penguin, giraffe, kangaroo, centipede, alligator, reindeer, elephant, butterfly, and knight on horseback. A photograph depicts each completed item. This absorbing book, with its contemporary approach to an ancient art form, will captivate paperfolders with hours of creative entertainment and provocative reading.… (meer)

I've always told myself that I should really read the text at the beginning of this book describing the creative process used in devising new origami models. I'm sure it is fascinating. The models themselves are really nice. There's a relatively straightforward hummingbird that looks incredibly realistic, and some fantastic models that are a bit more complicated. I can remember buying foil-backed paper and cutting it into 18-inch squares in order to make squids and octopi from this book. The designs for both contain incredible detail, down to octagonal sink-folded eyes and an ink jet for the octopus. There's also a pretty sweet knight on horseback made from a single sheet of paper. You should definitely figure out a way to obtain squares of paper that are bigger than ten inches for a lot of these models. They're tough to do with small paper. There's some designs to use with dollar bills too; my favorite is a dollar bill bow tie with a sink fold in the middle. The designs are, for the most part, pretty advanced, and might not be appropriate for the novice paperfolder. I'm currently trying to figure out what I did with this book, because I'd like to make the squid and octopus models again. ( )

How could I resist to a colibri, a scorpion, and there are fractals in the introduction. Time will tell if I am able to reproduce those superb models.

I believe, though, that chance favors the prepared mind, and that the many hours spent discarding useless combinations are far from worthless  . . . often the problem confounds and must disappear, unsolved, into the inventor's mind, only to reemerge weeks, months, or years later, surging up within him, demanding a resolution.  Only then, after a seemingly endless string of wrong turns, does the long-awaited moment of illumination occur, when from a meaningless jumble of angles and edges the pattern appears, the divide is crossed, ad there sits the model, the theorem, the chess sequence, the melody, the painting, the poem.
