Great at introducing first graders to different words that have similar meanings. For example, There is one page that talks about the words: dazzling, brilliant, luminous to describe lightning. On a few pages it explicitly says that synonyms could be verbs/nouns/adjectives(and gives a short explanation about what nouns and verbs are). Would be good in having students describe an object that they could bring to school (example: a stuffed bear: could be soft, furry, fluffy). ( )

I thought that this was a good book. I liked that the author gave ideas for games to play that involved synonyms. For example, the author suggests that readers play a game in which they brainstorm synonyms. This provides an educational extension to the book. I also liked that the author provided resources that could be used for the reader to learn more about synonyms. For example, he gives titles of other books about synonyms as well as helpful websites. The main idea of this book is that synonyms add a "colorful variety" to your writing. ( )

If You were a Synonym is an excellent picture book that describes and gives examples of synonyms. The book shows that a synonym can be an adjective, a verb, or a noun. The book shows sentences with the synonyms in bright, bold colors so that they are easy for a child to pick out. It also tells students what a thesaurus is and how a they can use it to find synonyms and antonyms. At the end of the book there is also a page that says "Fun with Synonyms" that describes an activity for students to use synonyms. The last page of the book contains a glossary, websites and more books about synonyms. This book is very informational and well suited for teaching young readers about synonyms. ( )
