Summary: In Africa Brothers and Sisters, Jesse asks his father why he doesn’t have any brothers or sisters. His father tells him he does have brothers and sisters, in Africa. Jesse and his father talk about many of the peoples of Africa. They talk about something each group is known for, from dancing, to fishing, to basket weaving, and more. Jesse enjoys talking to his father about the tribes.

Personal Reaction: This is a nice book if you want to be briefly introduced to some of the tribes in Africa. There isn’t a lot of detail, but you get the sense that they all are connected, and that Jesse and his father feel connected to them too. There is a helpful pronunciation guide following the story, and also a map that shows the regions where the people mentioned live.

Extension Ideas: This is a good book when teaching about Africa, or different cultures. Students could use a map to locate the areas where the tribes mentioned in the book live. They could also choose a tribe to study and present to the class. ( )
