An intriguing little section of Hakluyt's 1589 edition of The Principall Navigations that tells the story of Ingram's amazing walk from Mexico to near Cape Breton in 1568 and 1569. It was an amazing journey for three untutored English sailors in the uncivilized Indian territory of the American Southeast. The descriptions get a bit zany, elephants for instance, but other parts ring true. It includes what is probably the first English description of animals like the buffalo, and notes, intriguingly, that many of the Indians used Welsh words! Including the first theory that the word "penguin" derives from the Welsh words pen (head) and gwyn (white). Interesting, though Hakluyt and Purchas removed it from their latter editions, as being too "fantastical." ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
