Promises is an extremely touching book that discusses a hard to talk about subject. I think this is an important topic because unfortunately many children go through this. Not only is it important for children that are going through this to read, but also for those children who have healthy parents in order to help them understand. As an adult, it still brought tears to my eyes but filled me with hope at the same time. It is relatable in my life and even now I have those feelings that the little girl in the story has. A book like this can help a child cope and feel understood when experiencing these difficult times. I love how the book ended. Although the mom could not promise that she would never get sick again, she was able to make other promises and was finally feeling better. ( ) Sarah’s mom is sick and she wants the days her mom was healthy back. She wants a promise that her mom won’t be sick anymore, but no one can make that promise so they make different ones. The illustrations help readers feel Sarah’s ups and downs, her sadness and her happiness, and especially her love for her mom. They are funny and hearth-warming, and really help readers connect with the book. Promises is a book that I feel would be a good way to tell children about cancer. I didn't love it as much as other books because it seems a tad hard for younger kids to understand. If you were reading this book to smaller children they might not understand what all the symptoms of cancer are. However, if you are trying to inform children about the symptoms of cancer, it is a great read! I would recommend this book for breast cancer awareness month. I think it is great to read a book when it is a special time in the year when it is celebrated. Even if this book is not specifically breast cancer. A story about a mother who has cancer and a daughter who does not understand it. This story is very touching. When reading this book to children you could explain why the things that are happening in this story are happening, like her mother losing her hair. Also why she goes to the doctor or hospital so much. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
