Sandham has a great attitude which somehow helps him get through a long, long trip. I now want to go to the Skeleton Coast.....on my list of things to do, maybe after South Georgia. I usually sell this sort of book because it has little value to me after the read, but because I can see myself going to the area, I think I'll hold onto this. Some of his experiences reminded me of similar times on trips of mine....good stuff! Incredible story of trekking from Namibia's Atlantic Coast to the Indian Ocean (ending up at Zanzibar). Although the author's attacked by neither man nor beast (just insects aplenty), he has his share of troubles, starting with recalitrant wild donkeys, and finishing up with a week of malaria treatment (apologies if that proves a spoiler). Terrific writing skills and a great sense of humor make this book one of my top books for the year. Highly recommended. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Inspired by the great explorers, Fran Sandham left the daily grind of London to undertake an extraordinary adventure. 'Traversa' is the funny and engaging story of his epic 3,000-mile walk across an entire continent, from Namibia's Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean near Zanzibar ... "Traversa" is a fascinating account of the hardships and hilarity Fran Sandham experienced during his epic solo journey on foot across Africa, from the Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean through Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania. Inspired by the legendary crossings of the great explorers, Sandham left the daily grind of London to undertake an extraordinary adventure. "Traversa" describes his brushes with danger in the form of lions and snakes, land mines and bandits, his 2-month battle with a syphilitic donkey, malaria and the everyday troubles that arise when walking across Africa. Underpinned with stories of the great explorers themselves - Livingstone, Stanley and Galton among others - "Traversa" is the written proof of Sandham's grit, determination and sheer obsession with the continent of Africa.
