Started to read this for the historical details mixed in the narrative. Hawaiian history is absolutely fascinating and very complex, and this book incorporates a lot it in, I think, a good way - although the writing is plain. But once it got modern (early 1990's) the storyline degenerated - plain writing/bad story, no thanks. I gave up 4/5 of the way through. ( ) Wonderfully written saga of Native Hawaiian family, covering much Hawaiian history. Excellent characterization and scene setting. Spirituality and magic enhance the atmosphere. The story revolves around the women of the family, in particular the Grandmother and her four granddaughters. You are drawn into the world of the four granddaughters, each of mixed race and each the child of a different mother, from their childhood summers in Hawaii to their middle age, as they struggle to identify themselves in relation to their grandmother and Hawaii. Never been to Hawaii but if the sentiments of the Hawaiians towards Caucasians as portrayed in this book are accurate, don't think I'd feel welcome... geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
From the first meeting of a runaway Tahitian princess and a shipwrecked Yankee sailor, the saga of one extraordinary Hawaiian family follows their triumphs, tragedies, intrigues, and involvement in the key events of their times, from the early nineteenthcentury to the present.
