It is an encyclopedia of ideas and concepts that, when taken together, explain a conflict that is practically beyond human understanding. At its heart, it is a work of Science Fiction, dealing with a war between two groups; The Great Houses (beings of such immense power and magnificence that they in effect *define* the laws of the universe.) and 'The Enemy' (A rather hazy villain, whose motives and function are shrouded in mystery. Or, to put it simply, a war between 'cause' and 'effect'. Faction Paradox is a group that sits on the edges of this 'War in Heaven', and scavange what they can from the battlefields while keeping a low profile. The tricky bit however, is in grasping that this is NOT a war in a traditional sense. In some ways it is a 'culture war' but that is misleading, because culture is often used as weapon in this war. The book is non-linear, but that doesn't mean that its encyclopedia structure prevents a story from being told. In fact, there is more than one story being told simultaneously here. However, it is designed so that you can pick up the book, turn to any page, and begin reading, and furthermore, no two read-throughs of the book will be identical. Though Faction Paradox was born from the Virgin Books Doctor Who novels, it has definately torn itself apart from them. While some of the ideas are the same, the names have been altered and ultimately a new and startlingly different vision is created. Doctor Who enthusiasts will be amused by trying to pick out the parallels between the 'Whoniverse' and the Faction Paradox universe, but those without a background in Doctor Who will not miss out on a thing. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A stand-alone novel in alphabetical order...Before the Faction Paradox series from Image Comics, there was the War in Heaven-a wide-ranging conflict between the immovable Great Houses, the renegade Faction Paradox and other major powers. All of them possess time-travel technology-and all of them are trying to usurp various points in history, thus erasing thier opponents from the timestream. Marking the first five decades of the cosmic-spanning conflict, The Book of the War is an A to Z self-contained complete guide to the Spiral Politic, from the beginning of recorded time to the fall of humanity. This book chronicles the rise of the Faction as a renegade House, the creation of a living timeship named Compassion, some brutal battles across all of time and space and more. All in all, The Book of the War serves as the No. 1 entry point into the Faction Paradox comics and novel lines. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

The first in the series of Faction Paradox Doctor Who spinoff books, this is supposedly an encyclopedia of things in the Faction Paradox world which sort of comes together to make a story or several stories (an approach also used by Christopher Priest in The Islanders). I admit I did find it all pretty confusing, but it was engaging enough that I've got hold of the next few volumes in the series and will start getting through them at the rate of one a month for the next while.
