I read Boot coming from the vantage point of a mom sending her son off to the Marine Corps. I found it very interesting and enlightening for me as I followed along on my son's journey. (Yeah, I'm that kinda mom, I'm afraid, rfmagui.) I haven't read Making the Corps by Ricks, but know his work from coverage of the military since that time for the media and he seems to have an excellent understanding of it all. I'll have to check out Making the Corps. ( ) 3372. Boot, by Daniel Da Cruz (read Nov. 25, 2000) When about a year ago I read Making the Corps, by Thomas E. Ricks, I was so impressed by it. Then I read reviews on Amazon which said Boot was a much better book on Marine boot camp. So when I saw the book I read it. They are wrong. Making the Corps is far and away the better book, at least for someone who wants to reflect a bit on the process. Boot describes the minutiae of the training more, and so someone who went thru Marine boot might get more from it than did I, but Making the Corps is a broader view, without the right-wing potshots Boot throws in. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
It's America's boot camp, 88 days of drills, inspections, rifle practices, war games, grueling physical exercise and a regimen that separates the men from the boys... Boot is an insider's account, told by a former Marine and veteran journalist who went back to Parris Island to see if today's grunt measures up to the crack troops he served with in the South Pacific. He follows the recruits of Platoon 1036 from Day One through every step of the rugged training that transforms raw recruits into a fighting elite. His searingly honest, you-are-there coverage brings these unforgettable weeks to life...and lets anyone who's been there judge for himself if today's brand of "tough" is tough enough for a real Leatherneck, a man proud to be a Marine.
