Title says it all: the collective fears and desires of the great mass of German people during the rise and fall of the Nazi party. Not an attempt to document the psychology of these people, nor an attempt to "explain" the arc of history by appealing to the innate character of German citizens in the 1930s -- there are enough of those books already. This one merely tracks the changing fortunes of various groups under Nazism -- skilled workers, soldiers, mothers, church officials, business leaders, and so on. Turns out that German society was much more heterogenous than I could have guessed, that the cult of personality that surrounded Hitler vied with other impulses -- the desire for law and order, patriotism, hatred of communism -- in the minds of German citizens, making the unfolding of history much more haphazard than I imagined. A useful corrective to the overly simple-minded idea that any given set of enemies can just be "evil" -- that they also have a confusing history of ambiguities and conflicting goals. 3357. The Social History of the Third Reich 1933-1945, by Pierre Aycoberry (read Oct 11, 2000) This is a book first published in 1998, by a French professor at Strasburg. It is not a pleasant book, but it is good to continually make oneself conscious of the great evil that could occur in the civilized 20th century. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"This book presents the whole of the social spectrum in German society, from the elites to the middle class to the workers, in which the Nazi party was never a separate element but an inextricable part of the increasingly politicized social reality of Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. Issues of anti-Semitism and race are of course paramount, but The Social History of the Third Reich pays close attention to the roles that economics and class also played in shaping the Germany of the Third Reich."--BOOK JACKET. "Aycoberry presents the stories of collaboration and complicity of German citizens as well as those of violence and repression."--Jacket. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
