The passionate life and loves of Sappho, poet of Lesbos... The turbulent, colourful society of Greece in the 6th century B.C. is the setting for this panoramic portrait of a great poet, lover, teacher and, above all, woman - Sappho of Lesbos. The gentle security of her childhood having been shattered by the accession of the Tyrants, Sappho is sent into exile for political dissidence, and from there begins the long struggle to regain her birthright - culminating in her return to Lesbos, hailed as the greatest poet of her age. Sappho's poetry shines out of the darkness of time to show a life filled with passion, danger, and magnificent, vigorous characters. Told through the words of Sappho herself, and those of her friends and lovers, this is a lyrical, engrossing novel, as full of colour and invention as the world it brings to life. Praise for Martha Rofheart 'A tale of drinking, wenching, hunting and fighting' - Evening News 'Cause for celebration!' - Los Angeles Times Martha Rofheart grew up in the Portland neighbourhood of Louisville, surrounded by a large Upper Middle Class extended family, which was spread out along Portland Avenue and nearby streets. Growing up she had several poems published in Louisville newspapers and magazines, and at age 10, she won a national one-act play contest. After moving to New York City, Martha became a model and actress. Martha made her Broadway debut in 1942, and was a well-known protégé. Soon after her son was born in 1957, she chose to be a full-time mother and, eventually, a writer. After Fortune Made His Sword , Martha Rofheart wrote five novels and many of her novels were translated into German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Serbian. A wonderful account of one of the greatest Greek female poets of all time.
This is Sappho's life story from when she was sent into exile, by the usurpers that were trying to take over Greece and her people, from her home on Lesbos to her triumphant homecoming.
I was given a digital copy of this novel by the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review. ( )
