I came round to this book as I got further into it. At times, the accounts of the enthusiasm of Whitman's disciples seemed a little superficial -- long on biography and short on analysis -- and some of the material was already familiar to me, esp. in the chapter on Carpenter and Symonds. In general, I'd say that there's not a lot here that's truly new. However, much of the material was new to me (esp. the fascinating chapters on Gilchrist and Traubel), and overall the chapters have a cumulative effect. By the time I reached the Afterword, I was sold on the book's purpose, which is to recover a way of reading and appreciating Whitman that has been all but suppressed by academic study. But in many ways, Whitman makes more sense as a "prophet" than as a "poet." I for one probably find him more interesting as the former than the latter.

Robertson provides a lot of insight into 19th century ways of reading and thinking. ( )
