This book is part of the How Now Shall We Live series by the author Charles Colson. Despite being published in 2005, the content remains surprisingly relevant.

Colson focuses on the following areas

1. Rights of the individual
Lie 1- We have the freedom of choice to be who we want and to do what we want.
2. Marriage and the family
Lie 2- Marriage can be between any two people, and it lasts only as long as both are happy.
3. Society and toleration
Lie 3- We'll live in harmony if we tolerate the beliefs of others.
4. The arts
Lie 4-Art should break traditional norms and challenge outworn beliefs.
5. Christians in culture
Lie 5-Christian beliefs are a private matter.
6. The media
Lie 6-Entertainment is a vehicle to help us fulfill personal desires.
7. Spirituality in culture
Lie 7-God accepts us as we are, and there are many ways to Him.

This was a good reminder that Christians are meant to live differently to those around them. The book provides examples demonstrating how Christians of successive generations have progressively adapted and molded themselves to fit the culture. This trend has taken place in the lives of individuals and sadly also in the contemporary church.

The author reminds us that we must take a stand on biblical values now or we will lose the chance to do so. I especially liked his comments on absolute truth--he makes it clear that people should not choose Christianity because it appeals to them or because they like it, they should choose it because they are persuaded that it is the truth. Likewise, those that reject Christianity should reject it because they don't believe that it is true, rather than a superficial reason. Post modernism has definitely skewed this area of faith so that it is difficult to get people to even accept absolute truth these days but the alternative is nonsense.

This was a worthwhile read but probably not to read in one sitting! I started reading one section a day as there is a lot to take in and reflect on. I will read Lies That Go Unchallenged in Media and Government in due course, another title in the series. ( )
