[[Stephen Graham Jones]] is a new favorite - one of those authors who "makes it overnight," even though they've been toiling away for years. His 'break' was [The Only Good Indians], which rocketed up the best seller lists and ended up on a bunch of best of the year lists. Indeed, after reading that, I had to get my hands on more - so I went back to his beginnings, a story collection that I believe is his first published book. The writing is definitely raw, not just the raw in the substance of the books, but the kind of raw for someone who is honing their craft. By the time anyone noticed, Jones had it down to a sharp edge. But these stories, all centered on the scree of society, show the beginnings of an artist. He's able to highlight the dark corners of the world, where the monsters lurk, even if the monsters sometimes just look like an everyday person.

This is a book that not only gets better with multiple readings, but makes me want to write. Original and electrifying approaches to characters and to language. I loved it.
