This was an interesting read, there was a bit of information about the case I wasn't aware of, but I also did a lot of skimming because I knew most of the details. ( ) This is a Must-Read for True Crime junkies, and especially if you are interested in the history of psychological/physical testimony in US trials. This book was so well-researched, well-written and absolutely fascinating. I kind of want to hate Clarence Darrow, but I'm also very impressed with his genius. This is a thorough overview of the Leopold and Loeb trial, the science and philosophies of crime that were argued at the time. It's a little dry, unfortunately, probably a side effect of the age of the case and the fact that it was so sensationalized it's hard to tell what contemporary resources, other than the trial transcripts, are actually any good. This is a 1920's kidnapping and murder of a 14 year boy. The murderers are 18 & 19. They planned this because they wanted the thrill of carring out the "perfect murder". I liked how the author told the story from the history of the boys, the crime, the court & sentencing, and after their life in confinement. I did skim over the history of the attorneys and some of the details of Psychiatrists. I would recommend this to any True Crime book lover. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

It was a crime that shocked the nation, a brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child, by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb had met several years earlier, and their friendship had blossomed into a love affair. They believed themselves too smart for the police, but they were soon caught. They confessed, and the state's attorney announced that he had a hanging case. Set against the backdrop of the 1920s, a time of prosperity, self-indulgence, and hedonistic excess, this book draws the reader into a world of speakeasies and flappers, of gangsters and gin parties, when Chicago was a lawless city on the brink of anarchy. The rejection of morality, the worship of youth, and the obsession with sex had seemingly found their expression in this callous murder. But the murder is only half the story.--From publisher description. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
