Be a friend to trees was a book that i chose with the intent to tie it to the NGSS standard, From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes. This standard asks students to support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. The book talks about the step by step process of photosynthesis which does demonstrate what the standard is asking about but ultimately i thought that the illustrations and overall feeling of the book was too young for fifth graders and I think it would be better suited for a third or maybe fourth grade class.

This is about how trees are helpful and all the things they can make. For example, pencils, paper, fences, cereal boxes, etc. are all made from trees. The tress leaves are food the many animals and insects. They also grow fruit and nuts that humans eat as well. It talks about how tree sap is used for different things (such as chewing gum, rubber and soap) and also how trees are a home to many animals.

The illustrations go great with to book. The designs are fun to look at. The information is very accurate, it is information that you could find in a textbook and also online at a reputable website. The style of the writing is persuasive and makes the reader want to recycle to save the trees.
