As fascinating as it was to read of the experiences of privileged women, I found reading the descriptions of the conditions endured by less-privileged women to be stark and poignant. It was saddening to reflect on the trafficking of women for prostitution back in the 19th Century, and which continues today. In many ways, the attitudes toward women, women's roles and women's sexuality hasn't really moved on.
