Great book to learn about Washington at Valley Forge and the difficulties he and his soldiers went through and how they persevered through it. It is an easy read and the book provides illustrations with captions. The book gets the reader involved in the story and interested until the end. Freedman also provides a timeline for the Revolutionary war as well as a map of Valley Forge and a map of the Battles of the Mid-Atlantic States. ( )

Freedman does a great job of writing in a way accessible to younger historians. One aspect of this book I found a bit disappointing was the lack of primary illustrations of the Valley Forge winter. Most were romanticized interpretations rendered well after the fact.

This book is about George Washington during 1777-1978 while camped out at Valley Forge during the winter. He and his army went through a lot of hardships. These included lack of food, clothing and necessities. This is an informational book told like a story.

Truly an inspiring tail of Washington and the incredible leader that he became because of the sacrifices that he made. ( )

This is the story of the winter of 1777-78, when the ragtag Continental Army camped outside Philadelphia at Valley Forge. It was six critical months of the Revolutionary War, when everything that could go wrong seemed to be going wrong: the supply lines had broken down and the Army wasn't getting food, clothing or blankets, the soldiers' pay wasn't arriving on time, the men were falling ill and literally starving, and Congress was busy blaming General Washington. Washington couldn't respond, because if the true conditions of the Army were revealed, the British would march against them and destroy them. The courage and determination of the soldiers and General Washington are shown through primary source letters and documents, and artwork of the time. An inspiring story of what it took to win freedom, and what price the colonists were willing to pay to have it. 6th grade and up, especially appropriate for 8th grade. ( )
