1976 Los Angeles is the place where, tellingly, LAPD chief Ed Davis is most impressive person Morris met. She says hardly a day goes by when a celebrated european doesn't pass away here. She says this is strange since the city has no charms, no humor, no gentry. Los Angeles is the promised land for immigrants who still find hope here. Morris says Toronto, at the time, is the true immigrant melting pot city. Morris says that as Hollywood actors age, money blurs their memories and glamour. Not sure how she knows that. LA culture, she says, is full of vitality and fun, the Queen Mary in Long Beach is its own curiosity. LA, the ideal of American happiness by expertise & technique, can be found in cars, landscape and, still at the time, aircraft manufacturing. She calls it a world city, the city of the future, "the apogee of urban, mechanical, scientific man". A flattering portrayal of the city, if superficial.
