Spending a couple hours in the company of The Lady Chablis was entertaining, but the book is more about her flamboyant lifestyle than the underlying gender identity issues. Also worth noting is that the book is about 20 years old, and was most likely written mainly for its pot-boiling potential. The Doll has not had an easy or particularly prosperous existence, at least up to the time of this publication. 3 stars for sass and some fine photos of her righteous self. The unforgettable life story of the fabulous drag queen from the best selling Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The Lady Chablis, the outrageously charming drag queen made famous in John Berendt's best selling Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, takes us on an unforgettable tour of Savannah in her amazing story: a triumphant life filled with passion, humor, flair, and resourcefulness beyond the imaginings of mere mortals. Born Benjamin Edward Knox in Quincy, Florida, in 1957, Brenda Dale Knox (The Lady Chablis) always knew she was different: a girl with 'candy.' 'I never blamed the Lord 'cause I knew that he musta wanted me this way.' She's lived as the Grand Empress of Scrapin' to Get By, she's beat up bad-mouthed bouncers, known love sweet and tender, mean and rough, legal and outlawed...and she's survived, honey, she's FLOURISHED! Laugh-out-loud funny, deeply touching, and just as entertaining as The Lady Chablis in person, Hiding My Candy is one dessert listeners will find absolutely irresistible. “I was depressed most of the time, ‘cause I wanted to make my fem’ninity fully visible, which I couldn’t really do in front of Mama and my stepdaddy – ‘less, of course, I also wanted to be buried in one of my new outfits.”
Chablis started performing in drag in Tallahassee, then went north. “I’d moved to Atlanta to seek my peaches and dreams.” She tells about traveling the south performing in drag shows, getting famous, ending up in Savannah and Columbia, South Carolina, and talks about the people who helped her along the way.
With photos, a glossary of Lady-speak, southern food recipes, and make-up tips. ( )
