Nonfiction. It's hard to imagine a better book on eye care--or one with a more accurate title. An ophthalmologist holding several patents on artificial corneas, Dr. Abel explains new drugs and surgical techniques cogently. However, he also incorporates nutritional advice, herbal therapies, and treatments from Chinese and Indian medical traditions, arguing for treating the eye as part of the entire body. Jeff Riggenbach tailors his delivery to match Abel's prose. He's enthusiastic but careful to slow his pace when dealing with new terminology or concepts. There is one weakness to the book in audiobook format. The print version of the book includes many reference tables, and those are now hard to use. G.T.B. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine. Subtitled Prevent and Reverse Common Vision Problems, Dr. Abel's authoritative, reliable book will help you and your doctor become full partners in saving your eyes and your overall good health.

Most of us believe that conventional medicine is the only way to treat common eye problems. But there is another way. In this breakthrough guide, ophthalmologist Dr. Robert Abel brings you amazing nutritional, herbal, homeopathic, and Asian therapies, along with conventional methods, to prevent and even reverse most vision disorders.

Combining the best of high-tech conventional and alternative methods, this book covers treatments for cataracts, glaucoma, pink eye, dry eye, macular degeneration, diabetes-related vision loss, and more.

Dr. Abel also alerts you to the shocking damage that prescription drugs and over-the-counter remedies inflict on your eyes. And he tells you what an eye exam can reveal about serious health problems you may not even know you have.

"If you have an eye condition, ask your ophthalmologist how he will treat you. Then pick up Dr. Abel's book and note how many more answers he gives. I can vouch for the fact that the options he offers, being natural and nutritional, are far better." -Robert C Atkins, M.D., best-selling author.

Ophthatmologist Abel presents solid and detailed information on the various eye diseases and treatments (including surgery) for them. And he talks extensively (and repetitiously) on the role of general health, diet, dietary supplements, and a few things that are a bit too new-agey for my taste.
