Dave Peltzer’s Help Yourself for Teens is a useful and touching self-help book for young adults. The book begins by setting the stage: To deal with the future, you must first deal with the past. Part II of the book deals with helping teens understand that the choices they make are in fact their choices and that they must choose wisely and avoid hatred at all costs. Part III is about commitment and setting goals. A great strength of this book is that it is written directly to the teenage reader in the second person “you.” Many of my own students would feel like the author is speaking directly to them and therefore take the advice more seriously. The advice given is legitimate. A drawback of the book is that the language used is not accessible to all students. Second language learners would struggle with the vocabulary and concepts presented in the text. I would recommend this book for check out in the school library and in a teacher’s classroom library collection. It can be recommended to students on an as-needed basis. I have a few students I will recommend the book to this week. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
