As far as the Who Was series goes, this book really knocked it out of the park -- by far one of the strongest titles I've encountered so far. Not only is the writing top notch, the pacing of Harriet's extensive and fascinating story is well thought out. It helps to have such a strong and interesting subject, and I wish we as a culture didn't continue to let Harriet down so badly. This is a biography that shares the life of Harriet Tubman and how she was able to help so many black individuals escape slavery. Born a slave in Maryland, Harriet Tubman knew first-hand what it meant to be the property of a white man; she was whipped by owners and nearly killed by an overseer. From other slaves, Harriet learned about the Underground Railroad. She traveled north to Philadelphia and returned as a conductor of the Railroad, helping hundreds of slaves escape to freedom as she did. This book is full of amazing details and interesting personal information about her life that probably would not be found in a normal history textbook. The author uses such creative language and details that you find yourself lost in the story. Because this book is a biography I would use it as a supplement for a unit in a history class but the way it is written also makes it suitable for an English lesson as well. This book is a must read biography!!! The author uses creative word choice and amazing detail. You can almost imagine being there with the person. This book you could use in numerous of ways in history with time lines, history, or historical events. Harriet Tubman is most well-known for her work on the underground railroad. Prior to and during the Civil War era, she was called "black Moses" because, like Moses, she led people out of slavery. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
