This book is about a young women who has the determination and courage to become the first woman doctor in a man's field. I enjoyed this book because it teaches children that it is ok to be unique in a structured life. I would recommend this book for grades 2-4. This biography starts with Elizabeth living a life of luxury in Bristol, England. After her family moved to America they were involved with the anti-slavery movement. She was accepted to medical school in 1847, and she was a pioneer in preventive medicine. I read this book because I have three daughters (5, 8, & 11), and I wanted them to know that they can be anything they want to be when they grow up. This book also shows how a family can go from riches to rags and still be a strong family and survive. As a classroom activity, I would have my class identify other women who were the first in their filed. I would also ask all of my students what they want to be when they grow up regardless of their gender. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
