My response to Spooky and the Ghost Cat was, much like my response to the first book, one of qualified approval. Young readers looking for catty and witchy tales for Halloween will undoubtedly find the story engaging, and will enjoy rooting for Spooky, who once again pulls an impressive magical trick out of the bag. The sound words that Carlson uses, to indicate the cats' motion, make this a good read-aloud selection. Unfortunately, I was (once again) underwhelmed by Andrew Glass' illustrations. It's not that they're terrible (I do like his cover art), they're just not to my taste. His human figures, in particular, just look a little off to me. Still, tastes vary, when it comes to illustrative style, so I imagine that those who enjoy the artwork will find this one a win-win. ( )
