De vader van Barbara heeft zijn vrouw en dochter van vijftien jaar verlaten en is met al het geld naar Frankrijk vertrokken. Barbara's moeder, die nu in geldnood verkeert, tracht Barbara uit te huwelijken aan de veel oudere, maar zeer knappe en rijke Roger Montgeoffry.
