The writing style is exactly what I enjoy the most: lyrical and poetic, with a distinctive voice. The story hooked me with a strong heroine and a unique paranormal situation, and then once the hero was introduced -- sexy, strong and tormented, just the way I like 'em -- I was hooked for good. This is a quick, fun, sexy read. The ending dragged on a little in places, and it was rather anti-climactic since I figured out the one key twist, but other than that, I really enjoyed reading RAVENOUS. I'm off to see if there are other books in the series and grab 'em. ( ) The first chapter nearly put me off the whole book - the "I want her so badly but will only hurt her" within the first few pages without bothering to introduce the characters or develop the "tension" felt cheap and unbelievable. But the book is light and short so was the perfect size for reading while floating in the pool, so I carried on. It does get a bit better, but the world building and character development remains mostly tell-tell and no show. I think if the author had put a bit more time and a few more pages into it, it would have been much better since the story line had a lot of potential and the world was just different enough to make it stand out a bit from the pile of vampire/urban fantasy/paranormal romance books out there. As it is... it's an average novel with average characters and average sex scenes. If I came across more by this author, and they were conveniently sized for my deck reading pleasure, I'd pick them up... I wouldn't drive anywhere to find them though. Holly is a witch hired to make a house that has become sentient... not sentient. She takes her sexy vampire friend, named Alessandro, along for the ride. However, things get complicated since Alessandro is in love with Holly but, for reasons I can't quite remember, refuses to act on his feelings. (Think it has something to do with a compulsion to bite while having sex.) Anyway, this was an alright read. Ashwood has a nice writing style and Holly was an interesting character, but Alessandro felt like an angsty vampire cliche. There was a lot of "no i mustn't be with the woman I love for I will turn her into a poppet with my crazy vampire mojo" and whatnot. I probably won't be picking up books two and three in this series. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
