When the ant receives a special invitation to dine with the lion, she is ready to be on her best behavior. During dessert, the other guests do not mind their manners, each one taking half the remaining cake as it is passed around. By the time it reaches the ant, barely a crumb is left for her to share with the King. What to do?

She offers to make up for it by baking another cake, this one just for the King. Not to be outdone, all the other animals in turn offer to bake twice as many cakes as the next. As it turns out, this is not a particularly good idea.

Anyone in the market for a book about math, dessert, obnoxious animals, and the wisdom of knowing when you have enough will not be disappointed. As for everyone else? Let them eat cake.

It was about a lion that invited other animals to have a meal with him. After dinner, they all ate cake but were all very greedy in taking slices. The ant couldn't give any cake it the king so made him is own cake. The other animals made fun of the ant for not sharing. In the end, the king and ant shared the ant's cake together.

The lion, who is king, invites several animals to a special dinner, including the ant who has never been invited before. All the guests but the ant display horrible manners. When the cake is brought in for dessert, each animal takes half of the remaining cake until they can no longer half it and the king is left with nothing. To make up for it, each animal promises to bring twice as many cakes as the last animal, but in the end, only the ant returns and she shares cake with the king. ( )

Genre: Fantasy
Review: "The Lion's Share" is a book about an ant who is invited to eat a meal with the lion and a small group of animals. At dinner, each of the animals had terrible manners, except for the ant, and each animal ended up taking half of whatever amount of cake was passed to them (this is where fractions come in). By the time the cake gets to the ant, there is almost none left. The ant apologizes and offers to bake the lion a cake the next day. Each animal after that tries to one-up each other and bake double the amount of cakes. The next day, the ant delivers her cake to the lion and shares it with him. This book is a good one to read to introduce fractions to a class. Since each animal cuts the cake in half, students are exposed to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc. This is not the best mathematics book out there, in my opinion, but it is enjoyable to see how all the other animals act.
Uses: This book would work well when introducing or talking about fractions. Students could practice what they saw in the book by splitting something (like paper) in half over and over again.
Media: Watercolor, ink, digital ( )
