The worst thing to be said about Kathy Reichs: A Deadly Audio Collection is that Déjà Dead, Death Du Jour, and Deadly Decisions are all abridged, which is why I've docked half a star from my rating. The publisher thoughtfully used a different color for each book's CDs so even the most careless patron should be able to keep them straight.

While I don't like Ms. Irving or Ms. Borowitz' narration as well as I like Ms. Rosenblat's, they were competent.

I can cut Brennan some slack in the first book because it is the first time a killer attacked her, but I wish she'd have learned more from that experience. I'm also worried about the consequences of her various injuries when she gets old, especially from all those hits to the head she takes.

I do like Brennan's passion for her work and her willingness to stick to her guns when foolish homicide detectives pooh-pooh her theories.

In Déjà Dead, Brennan is the first to figure out they might be dealing with a serial killer. A subplot teaches the dangers of making a habit of going off without telling anyone where one is going, not to mention respecting a friend's privacy too much.

In Death Du Jour, Brennan has an interesting side plot involving authenticating the bones of a nun who might become a saint. If you think the difficulty finding those bones is far-fetched, I used to work in a hospital where all the room numbers were changed without being marked on the plans. Over 10 years later, they were changed back to their original numbers without changing the instruction sheets for patients -- not helpful for patients or new employees. The main plot may or may not involve a cult. Are the deaths in Canada related to the deaths in the USA? The experienced mystery reader will probably worry about Brennan's sister before she does.

In Deadly Decisions, the villains are members of OUTLAW motorcycle gangs. Instead of a best friend or sister being in danger, this time it's Brennan's teenaged nephew. Of course he's a motorcycle fan. A lot of deadly decisions got made in this one.

Even in abridged form, these are good mysteries. ( )
