The first half of this compilation book of Spider-Man's youthful beginnings is from a miniseries with several Avengers members and Nick Fury, "Ultimate Six". This storyline is centered around the escape of Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven and Sandman, and their extortion plot which includes vengeance upon Spider-Man. Basic story enlivened by the interactions between all the heroes involved and Spider-Man (who, incidentally, appears unmasked to so many people in this story that it's a wonder the whole world doesn't know who he is by now). The second half is from the "Ultimate Spider-Man" books, a storyline in which Doc Ock escapes (yes, again) and seeks vengeance on Spider-Man (yes, again). The most entertaining part of this is Spidey's efforts to get home from Brazil before Aunt May returns from vacation, and the most significant part is Gwen Stacy's discovery of Peter's secret, and the reactions from all involved. Same fine writing and characterization, great art, a little marred by hackneyed and repetitive plotlines. ( )
