I liked Inspector Littlejohn and his wife & the Provence setting was well described. The unofficial case he had been asked to look into was intriguing and I liked the fact that at the end, the author gives us information about the fate of the guilty, something that often gets overlooked. ( )

My first, and probably my last, outing with Chief Inspector Littlejohn. Plot was way too complicated for me, involving a cascading series of affaires d’honneur settled by faked duels, suicides, and accidents. Just the sort of things you have to expect from those Froggies, and yet they’re such jolly good cooks. Author clearly well-acquainted with this area of High Provence, and also with the small details of Catholic practice. Littlejohn and his wife are a pleasant pair—-a sort of watered-down Troy and Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn. But I am not surprised that they have faded away while Ngaio Marsh has retained an audience.
