I love this world, and as always the characters are vivid and gripping, and you're pulled straight into the emotion as well as the action. Ms. Derr is a genius particularly at showing characters' self images and the lenses they form for all their actions. Chris and Sable's interactions have just the right amount of snark and sizzle - and I love how Chris keeps Sable on his toes.

Three stars: the author understood the assignment (entertain me). Pretty good for 13 year old book.

Detriments: Chris's childishness, the inconsistent ghost powers, the alternate past/present chapters. That structure always annoys me. Positives: it has interesting characters, in an interesting world, with interesting cases now and then. The petulant ghost could calm down a bit, and maybe he does, eventually. I'll give the next in the series a try. ( )

I was extremely pleasantly surprised with how awesome this book was. At first, I was worried that the book would be more of an anthology since each chapter seemed like it's own story. Then I worried because it seemed to go in an odd order bouncing from past to future to back to past again. As I read more, however, Megan really made the stories flow despite the jumps in time. It was cool to start off knowing that everyone was connected, and then after getting attached to them, found out how they became connected. I really loved the characters of Chris, Sable, and Doug and I became completely drawn to them. Great use of magic, ghosts, demons, vampires, and many other types of paranormal characters. This was wonderful! ( )

This has been on my TBR list for a while, glad I finally made time to read it. I enjoyed the plot and the format of reading through the case files. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. ( )
