a bit long again for my wiggliest baby/toddler group, but a perfectly nice story with interesting vocabulary and an animal-filled plot: "The sky started to turn gray. Dark black clouds started to gather. Bird flew for cover. Now there was 1 in the hill hollow." ( )

This book is an excellent way for emergent readers to follow along and count with the teacher as they read while exercising their math skills and attempt to guess what will happen in the plot.

In the Big Storm, by Nancy Tafuri, it shows the first pair of animals that are trying to get out of the cold rain that is turning into a big storm. As you continue to read, more and more animals then all find the same cave. This book is a really engaging book to keep children reeled in! This ensures that they are counting with you and the number of animals that are going into the cave. ( )

This book tells a story about a couple of animals trying to hide from a storm. This book is also a counting book. While each animal hides under the hill hollow the count. It turns to be ten animals until the found two bears sleeping inside the hallow. Then they ran out scared and when they did they were counted backward. When they all ran out they realized that the rain was over and it was a beautiful day. This way is a creative way to get kids familiar with counting. The interactive story can keep the kids engaged with the topic. ( )
