Benson has a decent style and can be both quite funny and quite messed up. With occasional glimpses of Lovecraftian horror. I had thought this might be 4 stars but there were just too many average ghost tales. Out of 17 stories there were maybe 3 good ones and maybe another 4 semi-interesting ones. 'How Fear Departed the Long Gallery' being my favourite and also probably the best example of Benson's abilities, blending comedy, weird and horror elements. Of the other tales at least 9 or 10 were very mundane examples of hauntings. So overall not great. A young man is plagued by a recurring nightmare - though the characters within it gradually age and disappear over the years, the vision invariably culminates in a moment of unspeakable terror. And when he visits the home of his friend John, he is confronted with the house from his dream... Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
