At 800 pages plus index, bibliography etc, this certainly covers the subject in detail and is very readable. It would be immensely improved for the general reader with more maps (there are almost none), perhaps instead of the two sets of pictures, none of which do much to add to or enhance the text; for example a painting of the naval battle of Scheveningen seems almost irrelevant. (

Though this is the history of a war, it is more of a general history book than a military history book - you will read dozens of descriptions of battles and skirmishes and seiges, and yet learn very little of the skills and tactics and strategies of the conflict. However, it is a solid political work and explains very well the ever changing factions that acted throughout the war and its aftermath.
On the war in England, the book is clear and concise and detailed. On the war in Scotland the book is detailed - the endless debates and disputes and sermons and factions in Scotland seem so tedious as to be nearly as lethal as the fighting. But on the war in Ireland, the book manages to convey permanent confusion and hopelessness but not much else. I think that's the main weakness of this history.

This book totally satisfied my desire to learn about this important period in history. One which I never learned about in school. There is so much detail that it becomes difficult to see the whole picture, I fond myself checking short histories to maintain perspective.

One problem I had, and this is a general problem in reading history I guess - for all his brilliance, Cromwell was really a monster for the atrocities he committed and caused to be committed against the Irish people. I'm sure that, if he had the technology, he would have gladly created death camps and gas chambers and destroyed them all. Yet, in the author's summary of Cromwell;s life, this aspect is treated like a minor fault. (
