Black Jack is a mysterious and charismatic young genius surgeon who travels the world performing amazing and impossible medical feats. Though a trained physician, he refuses to accept a medical license due to his hatred and mistrust of the medical community's hypocrisy and corruption. This leads Black Jack to occasional run-ins with the authorities, as well as from gangsters and criminals who approach him for illegal operations. ( i know this is the same review from the hard cover ed. but its the same book without the extra story and still just as good)
I absolutely loved the stories in the hard covers. They were organized and well edited. If your able to get the first 3 special editions they treat you to an unreleased chapter of blackjack at the end of each. Which I highly recommend as they were well written takes on some high controversy topics. Nothing that will make you upset just some good well written discussions on them. You can see alot of the influence of tezuka's medical degree in the art and in how well he draws some of the surgery scenes. ( )

Best medical manga? Yup, best medical manga. Black Jack is an effin' champ. I'm so glad I got around to reading this manga; the first six volumes have been sitting on my shelves - unread - for an embarrassingly long amount of time. Already started reading the second volume! Black Jack and Pinoko are the best, it's true. ( )

The back of the book says that this is an adult book, but I have to say that I am not really sure why. There isn't really any crazy sex or violence. This was an intrigueing read. Black Jack is an interesting character, and while we are given plenty of background on him; I wish we were given more info on what makes him tick. Sometimes he is exceedingly selfish, other times he is incredibly kind, and there seems to be nor rhyme or reason regarding his decisions. Sometimes it seems to be a decision based upon the worthiness of the cause, other times it just seems random. ( )
