The blue and white linocut illustrations are what make this book; they're striking and simple and just make you feel frozen! ( ) A child hates the winter time because all his friends are gone. One day, he sees beautiful snowflakes and goes outside. There he means Jack Frost. The two play together all winter until the child speaks of something warm. Jack Frost disappears, but in the wind the child can hear him calling that he will be back next winter. I would use this with 2-4th grade. I think that it shows the power of friendship and the fun you can have with others. Kazuno Kohara, whose debut picture-book :Ghosts in the House!, featured the same style of bold, block-like illustrations to be seen here, delivers another cute seasonal title with her second offering, Here Comes Jack Frost (just Jack Frost in the UK). The story, told simply, features a young boy who is bored one winter day, because all his friends are in hibernation. Enter Jack Frost, who becomes the boy's cold-weather companion, but who cautions him that, with the first mention of something warm, he will disappear... I don't know that I found this particularly compelling, as a story, although I think that the younger children at whom it is aimed will find it engaging enough, but the artwork was really very fun. Kohara manages to communicate quite a bit with a very limited color scheme - muted blue and brown for the first few pages, and then bright white and blue, for the rest - and to capture the sparkly fun of snowy days spent outside. Recommended to younger winter lovers (pre-school age, I would say), and to fans of Kazuno Kohara's artwork. This beautifully and simplitically illustrated book introduces younger children to the folklore character Jack Frost. A lonely young boy notices a strange pattern on his window one cold winter's day. Excited, he runs outside and meets Jack Frost. The two develop a friendship and have fun together all winter long. This fun book will be a delight to parents and children a like.
