There's something about MacGregor's writing. It is just so engaging and makes me get lost in her books. She's not just one of the best lesbian fiction writers I think I've read, but also up there and with the best writers I love period. And this book was no different.

The story is of Leo, a photographer, and Claudia, a student teacher intern at a school where Leo's taking class photos. IT's not a horribly surprising story. From there Claudia and Leo both know Sandy and Maria and so the soon to be married Claudia and the nearly monkish workaholic lesbian Leo become fast friends.

The novel narrative bounces back and forth between two time periods. Present day and 1986 where (and when) the bulk of the story takes place. What I loved about the set up of the novel was that it's set up so that you sort of see where Leo ended up and that she seems content, but you don't know how the Claudia part of the story works out 'til the end. Does Claudia chose Leo, or Mike, or none of the above, etc. etc. Add to that the fact that I honestly had no idea which way the story was going to go until it went there.

I think this was one of MacGregor's best novels so far. A definite five stars. ( )
