El Elefante de Marfil by Nerea Riesco takes place in the later half of the 18th century and tells the story of three generations of the Montenegro family in Seville, Spain. The family owns a printing business cleverly called “Aquí se Imprimen Libros.” Each generation falls desperately in love with someone below their station, which creates drama and hardship for everyone. The family is also inherits the responsibility to be prepared to defend the city by competing with the Moroccans, the Muslims, in a game of chess; starting with Leon (the pirate), then his son Abel, and finally his daughter Guiomar, who actually plays the chess game. It all sounds complicated and convoluted, and it is. Add to that the fact that the author wasn’t sure if she wanted to write a novel or a history book. The storyline is interrupted by long, dry bouts of history lessons. Also, defending the city’s tower, La Giralda, with a chess match seems a little pompous. The basic storyline was good and interesting, but the chess and history lessons got a little tedious. So, if you have a lot of patience, read it, otherwise skip it.
