I'm not really sure what to say here. This was a confusing novel that didn't really have to do with Amber, so I don't really understand the title. There were multiple narrators and timeframes which didn't seem to connect except for an elderly lady that speaks once to each of them. One of the storylines didn't have closure, there was an ending to it but questions were left unanswered. It could definitely have used a decent editor, as there were multiple times that it didn't make sense. I think the concept was interesting but the execution was a little lacking.… (meer)

From this first novel "Amber Undying", written by Mrs. Elle Aitcher and published in October 2022, I have vainly tried to locate the time, the country and the places where it occurs.
Thanks to the term carriage, I concluded that it took me between the 18th and 19th centuries, I think in England.

The plot is rather complicated and I had a hard time following!

My reviews:
The quaint atmosphere that characterizes this period of history, does not appear anywhere? Why ?

Furthermore, the very familiar speaking style of the heroine, does not correspond to the England of this 18/19° century, IF she belongs to the right milieu? -
- that is to say from a believing family (Protestant or even Catholic), and performing religious rites?

The tone of the novel is more like a verbose exchange between two high school girls than two adults.
Here, there is no presence of figures of speech, of metaphors so dear to readers, of allusions or comparisons. No suspense hooked me. Worse, no fear came to hit me!
(Now, every writer plays on this fear in order to maintain the reader and his anticipation).

Of these two sisters - I learn of their relationship much later - I don't know where they come from? What are their purposes in their lives? Their faith? Their personal stories?

There are also no sets, imagery, particular landscapes, no Victorian London for example, or sinister or legendary places. Nothing to relate to.

None of these sentences broken up specifically to stir up anxiety, no break in rhythm to cut your breath away, no dramatic irony to serve the suspense.

Instead, I tried to follow a convoluted, rather bombastic plot over 24 chapters of 293 pages! Way too long and devoid of any emotional release/feeling. Hence my great disappointment.

Above all, the absence of the social and psychological environment, which therefore takes into account the socio-cultural context essential for the reader to know what he is reading... There, I swam in the unknown. The result is that the book has no depth, no identity, and is more like a play.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this writing.

If you are a fan of urban fantasy, you'll likely enjoy this. The premise is interesting so far as I've not come across another that brings 19th century Spiritualism forward into modern times. It gets 3 out of 5 stars mainly for the abrupt ending, a style I'm not a fan of personally, and because there are a few spots where the dialog just doesn't flow as good as it did in other places. All in all, I would read from this author, or even from this series, again. (Is it a series?)

Interesting premise with potential, but this story needs some editing to tighten it up. The characters are vivid and the settings defined, but it's a bit disjointed and choppy. I hope that this author will continue to write, but will also connect with a good editor as they are worth their weight in gold.
