Um primor de arco em um primor de série. Simplesmente não há nada como Astro City.

I mean, it's God Loves, Man Kills. There's a few extra pages at the beginning and end framed as a sequel to Claremont's X-Men Black: Magneto one shot. A new introduction, and some interviews at the end, all of which are great.

And then there's the main story. It's tough to read. But in a good way? It's especially difficult in light of the Alito Draft that leaked this week. All that's changed in the last 40 years is that the ultra-right-wing Christian supremacists Stryker is modelled on are stronger, bolder, more organised and have way more power and control in the US and abroad. And it's terrifying.

I still find it tough to review these Omnibuses. They're a great way to collect and read stories, but each one has so much content it's hard to give one simple review for the whole.

Like, this volume includes The Brood Saga, the introduction of the Morlocks, 2 weddings, the Wolverine miniseries, the Magik miniseries, multiple annuals, God Loves, Man Kills, and more besides. How do you give one star rating to all that?

But at the end of the day, its peak Claremont with some fantastic art teams and wonderful, iconic stories. Which I guess gets 4 stars from me.

A strong finish. If nothing else, JMS is a master of plotting meaningful final stakes in the last act. Is it corny and a bit reliant on deus ex machina? Probably, but if you can get past that, you have what could be considered a great counter argument to Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End.

Not read in the Graphic Novel Book Club, but read inspired by it

The last 3rd of the story (even if it is the 3rd of 5 graphic novels), I did not know entirely what to expect going into this one. The peace and how the peace was both happening and falling apart. The continued government problems. The breaking and waking and dying of certain people busting my heart everywhere.

The last three issues. The big explosion. The last ride / The ultimate reveal for the very beginning of the story and miracle itself. I have so many thoughts about these things and how the world had to wait years through a Top Cow hold out to get to them. And just. Yes, and no, and I'm so close to having read this entire canon now, too.

I haven't loved a comic book series so much since Locke and Key, The Walking Dead or early Fables. While these all have very different stories, the high quality of characterization and world building are what I admire in all of them.
Astro City is a city inhabited by superheroes, but most of the stories are told from the point of view of the humans whose lives are affected, for better or worse, by living among these powerful beings. Great great stuff, and I'm glad there are many more to read.

I found another winner. I liked the old-fashioned feel of this book, and it was a cool idea to do a superhero comic mostly from the point of view of bystanders, innocent or otherwise. Good fun.

I liked how everything wrapped up for Royal and Charles, but two volumes for one story arc felt too long to me. Looking forward to a new adventure in the next volume.

I love this series. Volume 5 was another swell collection of stories.

I love the art and the atmosphere of this series. The lead this time around was kind of a sad sack, but my heart went out to him.
Volume 2 remains my favorite, but I still look forward to reading more stories in this nostalgic, original series.

This group of stories didn't grab me as much as the last volume's, but the book was still a strong installment.
Still loving this world!

I'm more into horror, fantasy and humorous graphic novels, but boy do I love this superhero series. I'd rather read Astro City than any other superhero books, except maybe PS238, which is also a sideways approach to the genre.
The POV in this series is often a regular Joe, and the regular Joes in Dark Age are two brothers, one a cop and one a criminal who both resent the "Masks." The transition from one point of view to the other was seamless, thanks to the color-coded speech bubbles, and their motivations for choosing their different paths are conveyed sympathetically on both sides.
If I knew more about comic book history, I would have proof of this, but I have a feeling that as the story moved over the course of about 20 years, the types of superheroes emerging in the 60s and 70s paralleled what was happening in comic books in reality during those decades. And that's pretty cool.
I'm looking forward to Dark Age part 2.

The X-Men franchise has exploded since its inception. Every year we witness series, after series, of new orientations and mythologies gracing pop culture with the adventures of Charles Xavier's maverick do-gooders who live in a flawed world fearful of their powers.

So what makes God Loves, Man Kills one of the most cardinal texts in the entire X universe? Hints can be gauged when one learns that the 2003 X2 film derived fundamental inspiration from it. Here's the answer, the X-Men live in a world plagued by the fear of its very protectors. What happens when this fear is cultivated, heightened and finally unleashed against mutant kind and that too in the name of religion? God Loves, Man Kills answers this pointed query in all its visceral glory. The chief antagonist here is not some superhuman rogue but Reverend William Stryker; a common man of the cloth armed with a Bible and inspired by a Vendetta against Mutantkind.

While many critics have argued that the ending is highly anticlimactic, I believe it sticks firmly to the highly symbolic nature of the story. What Claremont has done is that he has transposed our fears of racial differences within the X-verse and amplified them for our own observation. God Loves, Man Kills is one for the history books.

Yahoo! My new library has all the Astro City volumes my last library was lacking! Time for a week-long binge to catch up!

I start off with a melancholy volume about a pair of non-powered superheroes who realize they are starting to age out of the profession. Quarrel reflects back on her hardscrabble origin in Kentucky and her volatile romance with the carefree and careless Crackerjack. Even if she can bring herself to retire, will she be able to persuade him to join her?

The backup story is about a gorilla who runs away from a hidden city of intelligent and militant gorillas in Antarctica to pursue his dream of being a drummer in a band. But how is he supposed to find his rhythm when heroes keep wanting him to join their teams and villains keep attacking his gigs?

These are not peak Astro City tales, but they are engaging with a fair amount of fun mixed in the drama and action. I did forget how dense Astro City books are. There is so much going on, they take me twice as long to read as books of the same length from the Marvel and DC superhero universes.

There's nothing here that hasn't been done elsewhere, but there are few people who have done it better.

A lot of fun! I was a little disappointed by the art (I think it's too muddy and dark in a lot of places for stories like these) but when it meshes with Busiek's writing, it really works. Looking forward to more.
