Jorge Eduardo Arellano was born in Granada, Nicaragua in 1946. He is the author of close to one hundred books, including the historical novel Timbucos y calandracas (Timbucos and Calandracas) (1982), the poetry collection Patria y liberación (Homeland and Liberation) (1967), and the essay volume Panorama de la literatura nicaragüense (Panorama of Nicaraguan Literature) (1996). He was awarded the National Rubén Darío Prize for Poetry, among other honors. Arellano was ambassador of Nicaragua in Chile from 1997 to 1999, president of the Nicaraguan Institute of Hispanic Culture, and secretary of the Academy of History and Geography in Nicaragua. Currently, he manages the journal, Lengua and the bulletin Boletín Nicaragüense de Bibliografia y Documentacion. Since his appointment in 2002, he has been the director of the Nicaraguan Academy of Language.
