It is a special pleasure to welcome participants in the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES), the first occasion on which the annual meeting has been hosted by the Tasmanian Branch. I hope you have an enjoyable and rewarding stay in Hobart. Worldwide there will be enormous demand for energy in the coming decades as increasing populations and industrialization continue unabated. There is also enormous capacity for energy utilization from renewable sources in general, most of which the Society accepts as being within its sphere of interest. The move away from fossil sources is feasible, we argue, and is no longer an option but a necessity under widely recognized environmental concerns. A feature of the Society's annual meetings is the breadth of issues covered, and SOIAR'95 is no exception. The Conference Committee has been especially concerned to maintain this broad agenda and to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange and discussion.… (meer)
