One night, Jack was sitting in the field with his dog, Spikey, when he noticed that something was wrong with Jupiter. Instead of shining brightly, it was flickering and dim.
Jack and Spikey boarded their spaceship and blasted off, headed for Jupiter. They discovered that an asteroid was on a collision course with Jupiter.
Can Jack and Spikey stop the asteroid from crashing into Jupiter?

Young readers, ages four through twelve, are the targeted audience for this space adventure. However, it is more appropriate for younger readers, perhaps ages four through eight, preschool through primary grades.
The story is cute and young readers, especially those who enjoy space stories, are sure to relate to Jack and Spikey. And Jack’s resolve, courage, and determination are wonderful examples for the young reader.
The story comes to life in the stunning full-color illustrations that accompany this story and capture the reader’s attention. Parents will enjoy sharing this book and its exquisite illustrations with their children.
The story has some issues, beginning with Jack landing his spaceship on Jupiter. Since Jupiter is a gas giant with no solid surface, landing there would be virtually impossible. But, assuming the ship could land, having Jack lift off from Jupiter becomes another impossibility. On Earth, escape velocity is about eleven kilometers per second; on Jupiter, it’s about 59.6 kilometers per second . . . and the spaceship would need to have more than five times the thrust of a Saturn V rocket. It would have made more sense if Jack landed his spaceship on one of Jupiter’s many moons.
Even though this is a “once upon a time” story, young readers are just as deserving of correct information as older readers. [And they need to read words, so the ampersand in the middle of a sentence ought to be the word “and” . . . young readers are not likely to know that the ampersand symbol stands for “and.”]
Nevertheless, read this book for Jack’s kindness and compassion while enjoying the dazzling illustrations.
