The Book of Pet Love and Loss by Sara Bader is both a wonderful book to flip through and, when the inevitable time of loss occurs, a book to help you through.

You will likely be familiar with some of the quotations included but having them all together is a treasure. I was especially fond of the short pieces about public figures and their pets. I wasn't aware of the episode when Mr Rogers brought death, loss, and comfort into his neighborhood.

We lost one of our dogs a few weeks ago after a lengthy decline and reading through this book was a great help. I think having the book include all of the things we love about our pets as well as the grief we feel helps to make the grieving a little less horrible. Or at least a little less lonely.

Okay, as is often the case, readers surprise me. Imagine, a book with the mention of pet loss in the title touches on, wait for it, loss. OMG, what a surprise! C'mon, give me a break, find something legitimate to whine about, not something asinine.

Recommended for any pet lover, whether you've recently experienced loss or not. The pain might not be reduced but the happiness of all that came before it will be brought to mind to alleviate some of the pain.

A greatly performed undertaking -- gathering all these words on pet loss in one compact book. Nicely done . . .

Sara Bader came across this ad while researching a documentary on the American Declaration of Independence: "Came to my plantation...a strange red cow...." She decided to look further into classified ads from the 1700s to the present day to see what they could reveal about our history and preoccupations over time.

The book is organized by subject: lost and found; runaway slave notices; information wanted; personals; help wanted and swap. Populated with many examples of actual ads, Ms. Badar talks about what life was like in early America, sometimes contrasting similar ads from modern times.

Engaging, often funny, I throughly enjoyed this short book.½
