Lisa Baldwin

Lists and annotates 790 texts in this private martial arts collection. Subjects range from the traditional martial arts of China, Japan, and Korea to ancillary topics such as acupuncture and Zen meditation. Also describes many works of non-traditional self-defense such as those treating urban survival, streetfighting, and non-classical weapons. The Maccarrone-Kresge Martial Arts Book Collection derives from a collection of over 4,000 books and magazines acquired over many years by Ted and Kim Kresge of St. Petersburg, Florida. The collection became available for purchase in January 1981. Mr. Maccarrone, a black belt instructor, with a studio in Patchogue, Long Island, suggested that the collection would be a useful addition to the Patchogue Medford Library. The Library agreed to share the cost of acquisition and undertook to catalog and process a portion of the collection. We are grateful to Mr. Maccarrone not only for his generosity in meeting most of the costs but for his initiative in making this unique collection available to the readers of Suffolk County. What is presented here is an annotated bibliography prepared by Lisa Baldwin. Miss Baldwin joined the library staff as a high school page. She continued working with us through her undergraduate college years. After acquiring her MLS degree from Genesee she joined the professional staff on a part-time basis. One of the rewards of working in a library is that one encounters capable and enthusiastic colleagues, like Lisa Baldwin, and also members of the community who make original and lasting contributions, like Mr. Maccarrone.
