Alpha door Emery Balint
set in hungary beginning just prior to WWI. Alpha, a naive young artist, succumbs to alcohol and later (during/after the war) to PTSD, with much commentary on god, the devil, and their place in the lives and culture of humans. a lot of awful (not the prose but the things described) events both "real" (supposed to have actually happened to protagonist) and hallucinatory.
