P. Giuseppe Bonavenia

This tome consists of four books and an index. It contains a study of the life and work of Saint Alfonsus Rodriguez who was born Segovia, 1532 and died Majorca, 1617. Rodriguez, an influential Spanish Jesuit lay brother, was beatified in 1825 and canonized in 1887. In the front of the book is a beautifully engraved frontispiece of Rodriguez at prayer.

Saint Rodriguez entered the Society late in life after he was unsuccessful in the wool-merchant business that he inherited from his father. When his wife, daughter and mother died he decided that he had to give very serious thought to what God was calling him too. He was always a devout man. At this time he was in his forties, uneducated and ill. And though he felt he had a calling to join the Society of Jesus, he was denied entrance.

But like Saint Ignatius Loyola before him he enrolled in school with young boys so he could earn an education and dedicated his life to God. He eventually entered the society as a lay brother. He held the position of hall-porter for over forty years and lived a very pious and obedient life. We read here of a great example of a humble life.
