This is an excellent graphic novel based upon a novella by Joe Hill. When an unexpected storm brings a rain of solid needles rather than water, chaos and death follow. As society struggles to maintain order, Honeysuckle Speck struggles to process her own personal grief. Booher adapts Hill's work into a piece that resonates on many levels. There is a definite climate change theme as well as some less than subtle commentary on the great, orange idiot that was our last president. Most intriguing is that Honeysuckle is a lesbian. While it is an important aspect of the story, this is not an LGBTQ story. This is how you write an inclusive book. This is my first experience with Zoe Thorogood's artwork. Excellent>½

An extended study in bury your gays/dead lesbian syndrome. Better we sup on their grief than revel in their happiness, says Joe.

The dreary woe-is-me narration drags down a fairly generic horror road trip, and I could not care less about the twist ending.

Such a shame to waste Zoe Thorogood's art on such a wholly unnecessary story.

Happy #pridemonth, y’all! My next #queer read is KILLER ASSASSINS by @davidmbooher with art by @claudiabalboni, from @darkhorsecomics. Max and Alex, super queer reformed assassins, are just trying to make their way in the galaxy (and hide from their former, fluffy-monkey employer). When Alex’s old flame hands them what should be a simple rescue job, they jump at the chance for the money. You know these things are never that simple though. When the truth comes out about the nature of the job, Max and Alex need to decide between getting paid or helping take down a fascist, xenophobic dictatorship. What’s a queer to do?

It’s a fun, quick read full of one-liners and plenty of sass. The retro sci-fi pulp vibe is great. The entire creative team is #queer, too, which is a nice touch. I’d definitely pick up more volumes in the future, if they were to release any more.

The tagline is, "Putting the sass in assassin!" but the protagonists are no longer assassins and their level of sass is decidedly low. It's not bad -- the art is fine at least -- but until the otter bonus story in the back it wasn't particularly amusing. Maybe promote the otter to headliner?

Canto was a mini-series that ended without really ending. I was expecting the story to conclude at the end of this issue, but a lot of nothing happens before we're told Canto's story will continue in blah blah blah.

I felt like Canto was underdeveloped as a character, and none of the secondary characters were memorable. Honestly, I couldn't even tell you their names at this point. Someone assisted Canto in the later issues and they had a dragon-like creature, but I can't remember who they are or where they came from. Canto also has a pet that doubles as a friend (sort of).

I grabbed this comic because I thought it would be an interesting story to read with my son, but there was nothing that separated one issue from the next. Canto goes on a journey, but it never felt like he did anything. I wish we'd seen more between Canto and the girl whose heart he wanted to retrieve/save, but there are only a few broken conversations in the darkness, which were just his memories. If he's risking his life to save someone, I want to know more about that person.

Also, the villain is the bag guy... why?? His story didn't make sense either. He's super evil now because his own journey didn't go the way he wanted it to? So? Dude makes super evil creatures, enslaves countless others, and all because someone peed in his Cheerios? He said he was "saving" everyone, but I couldn't get behind his reasoning. Canto isn't a series I will be continuing in the future.
